Treuchtlingen is one of the tourist centres in the Altmühltal. Above all, the large thermal baths are a magnet. After 20 years of operation, the thermal bath was in a state of technical and structural renovation, and the user requirements for thermal and indoor pools as well as modern sauna and wellness facilities have also changed considerably. With a total investment volume of almost 15.5 million euros, the sauna and wellness facilities were also made more attractive as part of the modernisation.

Time-saving assembly on sophisticated steel construction

In 2020, the extensive renovation work on this major project, which is important for the city and the tourism region, was completed. In particular, the extensions to the outdoor and wellness area with spacious terrace facilities have upgraded the Altmühltherme.

After extensive tests, the client decided to have the total of around 1,000 m² of the sun deck laid with MOSO Bamboo X-treme® decking boards; their mechanical and technical properties are very well suited to the special structural requirements. The entire sauna deck, with several outdoor saunas and a plunge pool, was built on a sophisticated elevated steel structure that allows direct attachment of the substructure for the installation of the outdoor decking. The ease of installation and the option to replace planks as needed, as well as low maintenance, are other important features for large-scale, commercial use.

Reason for decision: sustainability and technical properties

In addition, neither WPC nor tropical hardwood should be used for environmental reasons and the sustainability of the solid, FSC-certified bamboo decking boards is fully documented. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Since the roots are not damaged when the mature trunks are harvested, deforestation is impossible. The Dutch company MOSO B.V. increases the stability of the already robust material by 50% through a Thermo-Density® process. In addition, the thermal treatment at 200 °C guarantees permanent protection against surface mould. After the Thermo-Density® process, the planks are more resistant and harder than the best tropical woods: Bamboo X-treme® decking boards have the highest durability class1 (EN 350 tested according to CEN/TS 15083-2), service class 4 (EN 335) and fire protection class Bfl-s1 (EN 13501-1). The quality is backed up by a 25-year guarantee.

With the decision to use bamboo decking for the sun decks of the Altmühltherme, Treuchtlingen is the first Bavarian municipality that has decided against tropical wood and in favour of a climate-neutral solution.
